For the past several years, the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) has conducted a Hearing Loss Prevention outreach called DiscovEARy Zone at their annual convention and conference, AudiologyNOW!

Starting tomorrow, Howard Leight by Honeywell, and its HearForever.Org hearing conservation initiative, will once again be major sponsors of DiscovEARy Zone at AudiologyNOW! – underway April 3 – 6, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. AudiologyNOW! is the largest gathering of audiologists in the world and DiscovEARy Zone is (quite literally—due to its location at the top of the Level 2 escalators) central to the convention’s hub of activities.

The goal of DiscovEARy Zone is to promote hearing loss prevention across a wider demographic than the typical occupational environment by showing the clinical audiologist how to incorporate hearing loss prevention into their practice, and engaging the public in fun, interactive activities, many of which are targeted toward young people who need to start protecting their hearing now.

DiscovEARy Zone teaches clinical audiologists how to create their own hearing loss prevention outreach in much the same way that dentists have been advocating decay prevention and oral health for decades. In DiscovEARy Zone’s clinical demonstration setting, attendees will see how earplugs — instead of toothbrushes — can be distributed with materials to promote their practices in addition to hearing loss prevention at office visits, health fairs, etc. They will learn how to do earplug fit testing and why it has become an important OSHA Best Practice for industrial hearing conservation. In fact, this year the conference program at AudiologyNOW! will feature continuing education sessions on earplug fit testing, including research and data-driven outcomes, as well as a hands-on Learning Lab. In partnership with the American Academy of Audiology, DiscovEARy Zone will be hosting two days of the internationally-popular Dangerous Decibels Workshop at AudiologyNOW! for audiologists, educators, safety professionals, and others.

On the last day of the convention DiscovEARy Zone will move to the Main Place Mall in Anaheim, California, for an afternoon of interaction with all ages of the public.

On display will be iPad games and apps, other interactive technology from Blue Tree Publishing, posters, and a visit from a popular superhero! Mall patrons will be able to evaluate the listening levels of their MP3 players with DiscovEARy Zone’s “Jolene” mannequins, Kali Bration and Tim Panic, to see if they’re listening at safe volumes.

If you’re an audiologist attending AudiologyNOW! in Anaheim this year, be sure to stop by DiscovEARy Zone and pick up your “I Entered the Zone” badge ribbon. If you’re spotted wearing your ribbon, you’ll be entered into a raffle for one of six Hearing Loss Prevention Starter Kits or a Health Fair Kit. If you’re in town during convention weekend, whether you can attend AudiologyNOW! or not, please come see us at Main Place Mall on Saturday, April 6, between noon and 5:00 p.m.
Howard Leight by Honeywell is dedicated to the prevention of hearing loss in every possible way and we are proud to continue our sponsorship and help spread the word about DiscovEARy Zone and the American Academy of Audiology’s efforts to engage their members and the larger community in the discussion of this important public health topic.
